Open-source AI pentest agents

In brief

20 open-source agents use an AI model to plan and run attacks on web apps, networks or practice targets. The most-starred on GitHub are Strix (74k), Shannon (51k), PentAGI (34k). They cost nothing to license, but you pay for the model, and 8 of the 20 have copyleft, non-commercial or unclear licence terms.

02

What the licences let you do

Permissive · 12

MIT, Apache-2.0 or BSD: use, change and ship it commercially, keeping the copyright notice.

Strix, PentAGI, PentestGPT, HexStrike AI, Decepticon, RedAmon, PentestAgent, Pentest-AI, Pentest Copilot, NeuroSploit, hackingBuddyGPT, Nebula

Copyleft · 4

GPL or AGPL: free to use, but if you distribute a changed version (or, under AGPL, offer it as a network service) you must publish your changes under the same licence.

Shannon, Cairn, Pentest Swarm AI, DarkMoon

Restricted or unclear · 4

Non-commercial clauses, added usage terms, model-licence restrictions or no licence at all. Read the terms before any business use.

CAI (Cybersecurity AI), Guardian, Villager, WhiteRabbitNeo (now DeepHat)

A summary, not legal advice. Each entry shows the licence as its repository states it.

03

Which models they run on

How many of the 20 agents name each model provider in their own documentation. Most route through a library such as LiteLLM, so any provider it supports will work.

What a run costs in model fees: Keygraph reports $6.10 to $115 per Shannon run depending on the model (details).

Cautions

Concerns raised by named security researchers or by the makers themselves. Linked to the source; the entries carry them too.

  • Check Point (2 Sep 2025) reported threat actors on dark-web forums claiming to use HexStrike AI to exploit three Citrix NetScaler flaws (CVE-2025-7775, CVE-2025-7776, CVE-2025-8424) within days of disclosure, cutting exploitation time 'from days to under 10 minutes'; The Hacker News reported the same on 3 Sep 2025. The README itself warns that it gives AI agents powerful system access and should run in isolated VMs. Source.

  • The maker itself warns that the archived framework is unmaintained attack tooling: dependencies will age and the prompt-injection weaknesses it documented will not be fixed, so it should run only in isolated environments against authorised targets and never as part of a production security programme (its README). Source.

  • Straiker STAR Labs (11 Sep 2025) warned that Villager lowers the skill and time needed to run offensive toolchains, could follow Cobalt Strike's path from red-team tool to criminal and APT use, and uses containers set to self-destruct after 24 hours, wiping logs and evidence. The Hacker News (15 Sep 2025) reported the same concerns. Source.

06

PentestGPT, pentestgpt.ai and HackerAI

Two different things share the name. PentestGPT is the open-source research project on GitHub (GreyDGL/PentestGPT, 16,325 stars, MIT licence), published at USENIX Security 2024; its own site is pentestgpt.com. pentestgpt.ai was a separate paid assistant for pentesters. Since at least March 2026 it redirects to HackerAI, whose code offers to transfer an active PentestGPT subscription. If you are looking for a PentestGPT alternative, the other agents on this page are the open-source options; HackerAI is the commercial successor to the .ai product.

Questions

What is the best open-source AI pentesting tool?

This site doesn’t judge quality. By GitHub stars on November 8, 2026, the most-watched were Strix (74,375), Shannon (51,444), PentAGI (33,688). Stars measure attention, not results; try two or three on a target you are authorised to test.

Is PentestGPT free?

The open-source PentestGPT (GreyDGL/PentestGPT on GitHub, site pentestgpt.com) is free under the MIT licence; you pay for the model it calls. pentestgpt.ai was a separate paid product and now redirects to HackerAI, which has free and paid plans.

Can I use these agents commercially?

12 of the 20 use permissive licences (MIT, Apache-2.0, BSD). 4 are GPL or AGPL, which require you to share changes in some cases, and 4 have non-commercial terms, added restrictions or no licence. The table lists each one.

What does it cost to run an open-source AI pentest agent?

The software is free; the model is not. Keygraph reports one Shannon run costing $6.10 with DeepSeek v4 Flash and $115 with Claude Opus 5 against the same app. See the pricing page for the details.

Are these tools safe to run?

They execute real attack tools, so run them in an isolated virtual machine or container, only against systems you are authorised to test. Several READMEs say the same. Two entries carry cautions from security researchers about misuse, and one maker warns its archived code is unmaintained.
